Volunteer Lawyers Project
Provides free legal help from volunteer lawyers to eligible clients. The Volunteer Lawyers Project has been coordinating the pro bono (no cost, donated) activities of Maine's bar since 1983. Additionally, it has from the outset provided assistance to clients unable to obtain legal representation with various levels of pro se (legal self help) assistance. The VLP's primary mission has always been to maximize the quantity and quality of pro bono and pro se assistance Maine's bar can provide to the state's low-income community. This has been done through operating its own intake and referral operation. As many as 10,000 requests for assistance each year are screened, with referrals to private attorneys in recent years ranging from over 850 to approximately 1,400.
